Saturday 02 April 2010 A STORY ABOUT BROOMS



A TRADITION ASSOCIATED WITH BROOMS

As I have said before, when a client tells me an interesting story that I think might relate back to my store and its merchandise, I would share it with the blog followers. Well this is one such story.

As some of you may know, we sell these wonderful hand made grass yard brooms. The other day one of my clients bought one and told me this story. She said there is a Portuguese tradition or habit, that if the host of the house has had enough of their guests and they think it is time for them to go home. The host will then take the broom and go and place it at the door.

The girl who told me the story said that when she was a little girl her grandmother would forever be walking around with the broom, looking grumpy and waiting for her guests to leave. However if the guests did not know the meaning of putting the broom at the door they just thought granny was in a cleaning mood.

I have no idea if this tradition is still in practice but it makes a great story.
